More than 9.6 million Americans took 29 million
whitewater rafting trips in 2004—up from 21 million trips in
2003—evidence of the increasing popularity of this river sport.
But while river rafting is exciting and exhilarating, it is also dangerous,
claiming dozens of lives every year. The Chapin Clark Whitewater Safety
Foundation is dedicated to saving lives by providing consumers with
whitewater
safety information, and by offering rafting businesses the
opportunity for voluntary
accreditation in best practices safety procedures.
The accreditation, offered in conjunction with Rescue
3 International,
the world’s largest whitewater rescue organization, is the first
of its kind in the nation. The Chapin Clark Whitewater Accredited Seal
will help consumers identify outfitters who meet or exceed high standards
of whitewater safety.
